The taxonomy of the genus Phoroncidia is poorly resolved. This species' abdomen shape is similar to the second species on the Fauna Portal, Phoroncidia FP-12379, but the colouration is different and therefore listed as separate species.
This species is also similar to Ph. cygnea and Ph. personata based on their original descriptions, but the black-and-white drawings of those are not sufficient to judge conspecificity.
