Barrow Island Simaetha
Simaetha
FP-13398
Discoverer: V.W. Framenau (2024)
Fauna Portal species: 13398Diagnosis
This species has previously been identified as Simaetha tenuior, but males differ in the presence of an anterior cheliceral protuberance, as is for example present in S. knowlesi(Żabka 1994). In addition, the retrolateral tibial apophysis in S. tenuior is straight, whereas it is slightly curved in Simaetha FP-13398. The species differs from S. knowlesi by the thinner retrolateral tibial apophysis and the shorter and less curved embolus.
On Barrow Island, where this species is found, males are most similar to Simaethula FP-3651, but those lack the sternal protuberance and the retrolateral tibial apophysis in that species is apically bifurcate. Females of both species differ greatly in size, with Simaetha FP-13398 almost twice as long. In addition, the central gap in the epigyne is widening anteriorly in Simaethula FP-3651, but not so in Simaetha FP-13398.

Fauna Portal Records
The map shows all records that have been verified as part of the Fauna Portal project and may not represent the true distribution of a species. Specifically, for described species, check the link to the Atlas of Living Australia on this page for potential wider distributions. Fauna Portal Reference specimens and Linnean types are shown in red. If you identified a specimen that exceeds the distribution of an undescribed species as illustrated here, please contact the Fauna Portal team who can assist with the lodgement of the specimen in a public institution and display on the map.
