Wall Crab-Spiders
Selenopidae
Selenopids are dorsoventrally flattened spiders which have have six eyes in one row, with the outermost eyes being the smallest. Just behind and lateral to these small outer eyes, they have a fourth pair of eyes facing sideways. This eye pattern differs distinctly to that of the similar, but generally larger Huntsman Spiders (Sparassidae), who have two rows of four eyes. The legs of selenopids bend frontwards (‘laterigrade’), which allows them to squeeze into narrow spaces. These spiders are known for their incredible speed, they are said to be the fastest runners in spiders.
Karaops is the only genus of the Selenopidae in Australia.
