Backobourkia
Males of the genus Backobourkia are readily distinguished from other orb-weaving spider genera by the presence of an apically directed flange of the median apophysis in the male pedipalp. They include medium-sized to large orb-weavers with very a variable abdomen colouration, but there are generally two small somewhat triangular or comma-shaped white marks anteriorly. In addition, the abdomen is covered in comparatively strong setae which are not present in other orb-weaving spiders.
The Australian fauna includes three species as listed here (Framenau et al. 2010); however, B. thyridota (Thorell, 1870) has recently been tranferred to Backobourkia based on its original description (Framenau et al. 2021). This species is likely a senior synonym of either B. heroine or B. brounii, but a definite decision on this requires an examination of the type material of which the whereabouts is currently unknown.
