Brush-footed Trapdoor Spider Synothele butleri Raven, 1994

Fauna Portal species: 5301
Family: Barychelidae

Diagnosis

Synothele butleri was originally described based on a male collected on Barrow Island (Western Australia). A recently female collected on Barrow Island was identified as Synothele 'MYG335' by the Western Australian Museum based on molecular data and examination of males of that species are consistent with the original description of S. butleri.

Synothele butleri is characterised by a distinct apico-prolateral spur on the tibia of leg I. There are similar undescribed species in the Pilbara (i.e. Synothele FP-11281) but they generally have less than three prolateral tibial spines on leg I in addition to very subtle differences of the pedipalp bulb.

Fauna Portal Records

The map shows all records that have been verified as part of the Fauna Portal project and may not represent the true distribution of a species. Specifically, for described species, check the link to the Atlas of Living Australia on this page for potential wider distributions. Fauna Portal Reference specimens and Linnean types are shown in red. If you identified a specimen that exceeds the distribution of an undescribed species as illustrated here, please contact the Fauna Portal team who can assist with the lodgement of the specimen in a public institution and display on the map.
