Dark Wolf Spider Hogna kuyani Framenau, Gotch & Austin, 2006
Fauna Portal species: 6105Diagnosis
(after Framenau et al. 2006): Hogna kuyani can be distinguished from H. crispipes and H. diyari by its uniform, dark reddish-brown carapace coloration with a dense cover of silver-grey setae and the absence of median or submarginal bands. The median septum of the female epigynum is comparatively longer than that of the other two Hogna species.
Hogna kuyani is a highly variable species and recent molecular work has shown that the variety described by Framenau et al. (2006) only shows one morphotype of this species. It is best identified based on male and female genitalia, with the tegular apophysis of the male pedipalp having a comparatively much longer ridge than any other species in the genus; correspondingly, the female epigyne is very long. The species can also be diagnosed based on molecular data.

Fauna Portal Records
The map shows all records that have been verified as part of the Fauna Portal project and may not represent the true distribution of a species. Specifically, for described species, check the link to the Atlas of Living Australia on this page for potential wider distributions. Fauna Portal Reference specimens and Linnean types are shown in red. If you identified a specimen that exceeds the distribution of an undescribed species as illustrated here, please contact the Fauna Portal team who can assist with the lodgement of the specimen in a public institution and display on the map.
