Females with two ventral epigynal copulatory openings without a scape, lobed spermathecae and a capsule containing a helically curved copulatory duct; males with longer cheliceral fangs than in Deliochus and Artifex.
Leaf-curling Spiders
Phonognathidae Simon, 1894
Type genus: Phonognatha Simon, 1894
(after Kuntner et al. 2023): Spiders of the family Phonognathidae construct two-dimensional orb webs whose hub is modified into a retreat, either constructed with silk (Leviellus) or by using a rolled leaf (Phonognatha, Artifex, Deliochus, Zygiella). Unlike in nephilids, the cheliceral condyle (boss) in Phonognathidae is smooth and is not striated. Further diagnostic features include distal grouping of setae on palpal tibia and elongated male palpal femur.
