(after Knight 1983): This species is of interest in having the head only very slightly narrower than the pronotum and the distribution of setae on the subgenital plates reduced in New Zealand specimens. It is sympatric with B. angustatus over the more southern part of the latter's range but males may be distinguished by the shape of the pygophore processes, which are bent medially.
