(after Lewis 1998): Animal with short thickset antennae with eccentrically inserted flagellum; dorsal surface usually bumpy with prominent ornamentation in the form of tubercules. Margin of frontal shield entire and raised from vertex of head. Ventral lobes on epimera 1–2 in Western Australian species. Posterior angle between epimera and tergites often acute. Sides of telson with central constriction in Western Australian species making an hour-glass shape. Pseudotracheae present in pleopod exopods 1–5 which are loose and overlapping.
Species of Western Australian Acanthodillo cannot be determined morphology. Both the pattern and degree of dorsal bumps can vary interspecifically, particularly between juveniles and adults.
