Non-convex endoantennal rolling isopods with short thickset antennae. Dorsal surface with prominent ornamentation. Frontal shield raised from vertex of head. Pleopods loose and overlapping with five pairs of pseudotracheae. Telson hourglass, uropod protopod long and tapering to distal margin.
Conglobating Slaters
Armadillidae Brandt, 1831
Type genus: Armadillo Duméril, 1816
The family Armadillidae is a major component of the Australian oniscidean fauna, but its taxonomy at the genus level is still very confused and in need of complete revision (Judd & Taiti 2011). Dorsal surface usually strongly convex and animal with endoantennal ability to roll into a ball (except Australiodillo and a few other genera). Cephalon fronto-caudally compressed with a wide frontal shield. Inner branch of maxillule with two penicils. Antenna 2 flagellum with 2 articles. Epimeron 1 typically without sulcus arcuatus (except some species of Buddelundia). Lungs on pleopodal exopods 1–5, or 1–4 in subfamily Buddelundiinae, or absent (e. g. Pseudolaureola). Uropod with protopod flattened and occupying space between pleonal epimeron 5 and telson. Exopod attached on dorsal surface or near inner border of protopod, or absent (e. g. Pseudolaureola). Telson with quadrangular distal part, often hourglass-shaped (adapted from Taiti, Paoli & Ferrara 1998).
Acanthodillo
2 species
Dorso-ventrally flattened with limited capacity for conglobation; light in colour with brown pigmentation on the pleon and pereonite 1.
Armadillidae genus 466 (BWI gen. 1)
1 species
Similar overall morphology to Barrowdillo except that the epimera are not horizontal.
Armadillidae genus 482 (BWI gen. 2)
1 species
Epimera horizontal. Schisma absent on the pereonal epimeron 1. Four pairs of pseudotracheae. Peopod exopodites 1-4 interlocking, 5th hidden by 4th. Uropod protopodite flattened and acute. Pleotelson hour-glass-shaped.
Barrowdillo
1 species
Convex with endoantennal conglobation ability. Pleopods 1 to 4 interlocking and interdependent, pleopod 5 covered by pleopod 4. Schisma present on posterior corner of pereonite 1.
Buddelundia
6 species
Highly convex animal sometimes with dorsal setae. Thickened ventral margin of pereonal epimara 1, often with Sulcusmarginali. Peronite 1 with schisma Pereonal epimera 2 with well-developed tooth-like lobe. Telson not hourglass shaped with distal portion subrectangular.
Spherillo
2 species
