Dolophones

Few Australian orb-weaving spiders are as easily recognised as the Wrap-around Spiders, genus Dolophones. Their abdomen is wider than long and often features tubercles dorsally, which in the spiders' typical resting position wrapped around a twig, provide perfect camouflage. In contrast to all other orb-weaving spiders, males of Dolophones have multiple strong spines on the pedipalp patella. The female epigyne is generally triangular with and elongated scape.

As of 2022, 17 species of Dolophones are described for Australia but species identification of almost all of them is impossible as the genus has not been revised with modern taxonomic methods (i.e. examination of genitalia). Species identification in popular literature, often reliant on abdominal shape, should be considered with caution as in many other orb-web spider genera, abdominal shape and colouration is not species specific.
