Synothele
(after Raven 1994): Synothele differs from Ozicrypta in that the claws on the tarsi of leg I in females are reduced to about half the height of the claw tufts and of the claws on leg IV. They differ from Aurecocrypta in lacking the broad glabrous ridge on the labium, a poorly developed maxillar heel and in having poorly developed, if any, posterior median spinnerets. Unlike Ozicrypta, male Synothele may lack teeth entirely on the claws.
Synothele is a very species-rich genus and species identification is difficult, specifically in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, where environmental surveys for mining proposals have discovered a diverse, undescribed fauna supported by molecular data. Identification of females (and juveniles) based on morphology is difficult (see Raven 1994 for described species) to impossible. Detecting differences in pedipalp morphology between species often requires side-by-side comparison under a microscope, including the apical view of the bulb. Other important differentiating features of males include spination of legs, specifially that of leg I, including the presence and shape of an apico-prolateral spur.
