The Fauna Portal Australia was launched on 5 September 2022 during the European Congress of Arachnology in Greifswald/Germany.

This pilot version of the Fauna Portal largely features invertebrates that are subject to research projects of the Harry Butler Institute, Murdoch University, who is maintaining the website.

The groups with the largest representation on the Fauna Portal include the Australian orb-weaving spiders in the family Araneidae with 116 species, and the Shield Bugs (Pentatomidae) and Assassin Bugs (Reduviidae) of Barrow Island with 27 and 26 species respectively.
